My name is Rafiah Maxie-Cole. I am a dedicated mother, advocate, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I also am the founder of Soul Survivors of Chicago, an organization dedicated to suicide prevention and the promotion of mental health and wellness in the African-American community. Tragically, on May 27th, 2020, my 19 year-old son, Jamal, died by suicide – just two days after the death of George Floyd and amidst a global pandemic and black lives matter movement.
This profound loss only strengthened my determination to carry on his legacy and bravely share his story, with the hope of helping others impacted by trauma and suicide. Through Soul Survivors of Chicago, NP, I continues her compassionate fight against suicide, raising awareness and providing support for families affected by this devastating issue. I produced the Documentary “We Cry Your Tears: The Jamal Clay story” the first documentary to break the silence surrounding the stigma of suicide and a reflection of the life and tragic loss of Jamal- from the village that knew him well and the award winning documentary ‘While the Children Fade’ http://www.whilethechildrenfade.com. I am also a strong advocate for increased education and understanding surrounding mental health. Join me! Stand for a future with stronger suicide prevention and greater support for those impacted by mental illness and trauma.
